Today, the Austin Board of REALTORS® (ABoR) announced a $50,000 donation to the American Red Cross of Central Texas to aid ongoing flood relief efforts in the Austin area. The ABoR Board of Directors approved the donation on November 25.
The decision comes three weeks after massive flooding struck many areas of Austin and Travis County in late October and early November, affecting more than 3,000 people and more than 1,300 homes overnight. More than 1,000 of the affected homes were severely damaged and many of those – particularly in the Onion Creek neighborhood – have been marked as condemned.
“Being an Austin REALTOR® is first and foremost aboutdoing what we can to ensure Austin-area families have a safe, quality place to call home,” said Cathy Coneway, 2013 President of the Austin Board of REALTORS®. “I encourage Austin community leaders to join us in supporting the Red Cross relief efforts for this devastating situation.”
Response efforts have equaled those of the Bastrop County wildfires, but flood relief donations have been a fraction of the financial support given in 2011. To date, the American Red Cross of Central Texas has provided more than 500 overnight stays at shelters, served more than 100,000 meals and handed out approximately 14,000 relief items such as clean up kits, air mattresses and comfort kits to Austin-area flood victims.
“The American Red Cross of Central Texas is grateful for this donation. It is through the generous support of the Austin Board of REALTORS® and other community organizations that we have began to turn the page from response to recovery,” said Marty McKellips, Regional CEO of the American Red Cross of Central Texas.
The best way to support flood relief efforts is by making a donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Those interested in donating $10 can do so by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999.
