Greetings!
There is a new sheriff in town by the name of Douglas E. Oldmixon. As the new administrator for the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC), Oldmixon believes there are too many brokers who sponsor licensees without adequate supervision, as well as agent teams that are functioning like brokerages. |
|
|
Oldmixon has also examined whether the education provided by the state specifically for Texas brokers is adequate. TREC chartered two committees to study the problem areas and recommend solutions. The overall objective of both committees is to have more responsible and better-educated brokers.
The Broker Responsibility Work Group and the Education Work Group have been meeting for more than a year. Both groups are creating a list of recommendations to address concerns about the level of responsibility brokers have toward their agents, clients and other parties in a transaction. At their August commission meeting, commission members will hear the work groups’ final reports and the proposed rule amendments.
Fortunately, ABoR has directors on both work groups. Personally, I am serving on the Broker Responsibility Work Group and Bill Evans of Austin Real Pros, REALTORS® is serving on the Education Work Group. We will be monitoring the outcome of the meeting and the pending rule changes. ABoR plans to support our broker members through these rule changes with information and education to help brokers adopt and comply with the new rules. The changes may create a disruption for those who are brokers in name only; however, it will provide an opportunity for other brokers to demonstrate their competency, retain their current agents and attract new agents.
Watch for more information to head your way about new ABoR broker support initiatives as they develop.
John Horton
2010 Chairman of the Board |

Austin Real Estate Market Remains Stable Despite Expiration of Tax Credits
According to the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) report by the Austin Board of REALTORS®, demand for real estate in Austin has remained stable despite the expiration of federal homebuyer tax credits at the end of April.
The volume of Austin area home sales in June 2010 was 1,987, down four percent from the same month in 2009. The median price of real estate in Austin increased four percent from June 2009 to $208,750 for June 2010.
“I think this report shows there is life for Austin real estate after tax credits,” said John Horton, Chairman of the Austin Board of REALTORS®. “Sales volume was down only four percent compared to June 2009, which was last summer’s peak month. In addition, the average time it takes to sell a home in Austin decreased for the sixth month in a row. Both of these factors point to long-term stability for our market.”

TREPAC Hits YouTube
The Texas Association of REALTORS® created a series of humorous videos on why you should invest in TREPAC. While these videos take a light-hearted approach to the subject, your investment in the Texas Real Estate Political Action Committee (TREPAC) is a serious business. Investing in TREPAC is investing in your profession. In 2009, TREPAC helped defeat numerous proposals that would tax real estate. Ensuring your rights as a REALTOR® and those of property owners are protected is TREPAC’s primary goal. Learn more about the issues TREPAC has fought hard for online. Do your part and invest in your profession today. |
