ABoR Sponsors National Night Out to Promote Neighborhood Safety

June 30, 2006 - On Tuesday, August 1, 2006, the Austin Board of REALTORS® (ABoR) will co-sponsor National Night Out, a community event presented locally by the Austin Police Department and Austin Energy. Marking its 23rd year, National Night Out encourages residents to help reduce crime and drug use.

"It's not just one house that determines property value," explained ABoR Chairman John Rosshirt. "The whole neighborhood really influences what each individual house is worth, which is why we encourage our members to be active in their communities. National Night Out is a great way for Austinites to protect their neighborhoods and meet one another."

The first National Night Out in 1984 boasted the involvement of 400 communities in 23 states. Today, the number of participants worldwide has soared to more than 33 million. One reason for the program's enduring popularity is that communities can design their own National Night Out celebrations. What better way to promote social stability than to throw a party?

Anyone interested in hosting a National Night Out party can visit https://www.austinenergy.com/About%20Us/Outreach/nationalNightOut.htm, a Web site provided by Austin Energy that contains applications and other valuable materials. For example, the site suggests different ways to commemorate National Night Out, such as organizing a barbecue, arranging for a law enforcement professional to address your gathering and enlisting neighbors to keep their porch lights on overnight.

Communities can benefit from National Night Out celebrations. Austin Energy suggests several ways to give back, including collecting non-perishable food items for charity, initiating outdoor revitalization and maintenance projects and establishing a neighborhood phone tree for emergencies.
