JOE T. JERKINS NAMED 2006 MOST WORTHY CITIZEN

March 16, 2006 - Every year, the Austin Board of REALTORS® (ABoR) presents one deserving member of the local community with its Most Worthy Citizen Award. The annual honor recognizes people who have demonstrated a lifetime commitment to serving others. This year, ABoR is pleased to announce Joseph "Joe" T. Jerkins as 2006's Most Worthy Citizen. ABoR will donate $500 to the non-profit organization of Jerkins' choice.

Following a successful broadcasting career in Oklahoma, Jerkins moved to Austin in 1978 to become president and general manager of KVUE-TV, a position he held until 1990. Soon after he began leading the station, Jerkins approached the Austin Police Department (APD) about working together to fight crime. Taking cue from a program in New Mexico, Jerkins and the APD formed Capital Area Crimestoppers, which to date has cleared nearly 10,000 felonies, recovered more than $10,000 in property, and prevented more than $22 million in narcotics from reaching the streets.

Jerkins also has served on the boards of various Austin charities and philanthropic groups, including the United Way, the Salvation Army, the Rotary Club and the Austin Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he served on the board of Creative Rapid Learning Center, which exists today as American YouthWorks. American YouthWorks is an alternative education program for students with difficulty adjusting to traditional schooling.

The 2006 Most Worthy Citizen luncheon will be held Wednesday, April 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Renaissance Austin Hotel, located at 9721 Arboretum Boulevard. Tickets are $30.

The Austin Board of REALTORS® is a non-profit, voluntary organization representing more than 7,000 licensed REALTORS® in Central Texas. For further information, contact Sally Yaryan at 512/454-7636 ext. 1600.
