Austin REALTORS® and Travis County Tax Office Partner to Increase Voter Registration

January 3, 2008 - The Austin Board of REALTORS® and the Travis County Tax Office today announced a partnership to increase voter registration among those who purchase homes. Austin REALTORS® will encourage new homeowners to update their voter registration information by distributing, reviewing and accepting voter registration applications.

The voter initiative will kick off on January 7, as 50 REALTORS® are being deputized at the Austin Board of REALTORS® offices.

“Being registered to vote is the first step in becoming involved in community issues,” said Nelda Wells Spears, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar. “Austin REALTORS® work with thousands of people who buy, sell and lease homes each year; therefore, they are key in promoting voter participation.”

There are currently more than half a million registered voters in Travis County. The Austin Board of REALTORS® reports that nearly 20,000 homes in Travis County are sold each year.

The Austin Board of REALTORS® is a non-profit, voluntary organization representing more than 8,000 licensed REALTORS® in Central Texas. For further information, contact Angela Brutsché at 512/454-7636 ext. 1300.
