Today, the Austin Board of REALTORS® (ABoR) announced a $15,000 donation to the Housing Our Heroes Initiative, through a grant provided by the National Association of REALTORS®. The Austin Board of REALTORS® has joined forces with Mayor Steve Adler, the Ending Community Homeless Coalition (ECHO), Austin landlords and other community partners to find homes for the homeless Austin men and women who served our country.
The Housing Our Heroes Initiative is part of the national Mayor’s Challenge to End Veteran Homelessness. Austin’s effort involves a coalition of Austin landlords, business leaders and service providers, who are working together to provide stable housing, extensive support services and temporary financial assistance to Austin’s homeless veterans.
Working toward a long-term solution, Austin REALTORS® are partnering with Austin-area landlords to commit their vacant rental properties to house homeless veterans.Seven leases have been executed on REALTOR®-managed properties to date, and additional units have been committed to this purpose. Landlords or property owners who have a unit available and want to explore housing a veteran can visit housingheroesaustin.org.
Barb Cooper, 2015 ABoR President, commented, “As Austin REALTORS®, we help families find a safe, quality place to call home. The Housing Our Heroes initiative is a chance to give back to the men and women who helped protect our homes as service members by offering them a fresh start to raise their families, build careers or simply get a good night’s sleep.”
Additionally, the Austin Board of REALTORS® Foundation recently donated $5,000 toward the Housing Our Heroes “risk pool” fund that will be used to ensure sustainability of the program including housing repairs and other costs associated to help house veterans.
