Austin continues to face challenges of past systemic inequities. As we confront changing demographics and a rapidly growing and evolving city, coupled with current economic segregation and rising housing costs, our city has been leaning into important conversations around these issues—and so have we. To effectively shape the way our city grows and serves its residents, we must examine if our organization represents the community we serve, and if our leadership reflects our membership. Last year, our leadership set an Association-wide goal of deepening our efforts on diversity and examining where we are and where we’ve been up to this point. Enter our first-ever Diversity Report.
Our Diversity Committee’s charge for 2019 was to establish baselines, benchmarks, and strategies for what diversity, equity, and inclusion at ABoR look like today, so we can have a better understanding of how we got here and how far we have to come. Our 2019 Diversity Report—hot off the presses—shows the makeup of our association, board, and city’s demography, as well as the perception members have of ABoR’s diversity. In the report, we also share our accomplishments, and our Diversity Committee’s recommendations to increase diversity and inclusion among our membership and leadership for the Board of Directors’ consideration.
